Mount Angel Abbey Library has an outstanding collection of Civil War materials, thanks to the dedication of Abbot Bonaventure Zerr, OSB, who was for many years the acquisitions librarian and was very interested in the Civil War. We're pleased when someone uses this collection; to encourage you to do so, we've prepared this guide.

Almost all of the Civil War books are on the second (middle) floor. Some old and fragile ones in the Fall room can be used in the library, but cannot be checked out.

Arrangement of Civil War Materials in
the Library of Congress Classification System

Like most of the rest of the library, the Civil War collection is arranged and cataloged according to the Library of Congress classification system. Library of Congress numbers begin with a letter. What Books Are Best?

Some of the bibliographies listed above evaluate the books they list. Books for College Libraries (Chicago: ALA, 1988) vol. 3: History, pp. 347-360 lists Civil War books recommended for college libraries. In general, these will be the latest and best books. They do not, however, include books thought to be too specialized for ordinary college libraries, but which may be very good for your research. Here are some of the books they recommend, arranged in the Library of Congress Classification order:
