Beginning Intensive Iconography Retreat
with the Classical Iconography Institute
July 7 – 12, 2024
The Classical Iconography Institute returns to Mount Angel with class sessions organized around the Liturgy of the Hours and monastic mealtimes. Beginning students start the program by first writing The Mandylion (Holy Face of Christ).
Learn the sacred, liturgical art of iconography in the Byzantine style, painting a prayer with historic pigments made from natural dry earth ochres and ground minerals in the ancient method of egg tempera.
Please see Classical Iconography Institute’s website for course fees and registration, or call Christine Thum Schlesser at 503.710.8800.
Registration deadline: June 7, 2024.
Classical Iconography Institute is dedicated to training iconographers capable of writing liturgical icons for the Church. The Institute continues the legacy of the Iconographic Arts Institute, founded at Mount Angel Abbey in 1987, which focused on the most ancient tradition and methods of sacred iconography from instruction by master iconographers. In 2022, the Iconographic Arts Institute nonprofit experienced a change in leadership and a new location, expanding its scope to year-round traditional instruction in sacred iconography. Classical Iconography Institute’s teaching studio is currently at the Holy Rosary Parish campus in Portland, Oregon.

“Am I Not Here, Am I Not Your Mother?”
The Story & Miracle of
Our Lady of Guadalupe
with Br. Louis de Montfort Nguyen, O.S.B.
August 9 – 11, 2024
A silent, spiritual and contemplative retreat centered on Mary, the ever-virgin Mother of God, who leads us faithfully to her Son and Lord, Jesus Christ. Mary, according to the teachings of St. Louis de Montfort Grignon, is the shortest, safest, and most secure path to Jesus Christ. God has ordained that his Son comes to the world through Mary, and it is by Mary that we come to Jesus. In perfect cooperation with the Holy Spirit, Mary formed and molded God’s Son, Jesus. Again, with the Holy Spirit, her divine Spouse, Mary forms her children to become like Jesus and be united with him.
One of the main goals of this retreat is to meditate on Mary’s most preeminent grace and role as Mother of God. Therefore, she is Mother of the Church and Mother of all God’s children, as supported by the teachings of the Church, the Church Fathers, saints, and Scriptures. Most importantly, we will explore the story and apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the miracles of the tilma and heavenly image of Our Lady, the ongoing significance of Our Lady’s continuous presence through this supernatural image, and how God is always with his people, through the Blessed Virgin Mary. When we can trust and surrender to Mary as our Mother, we are fulfilling God’s will and share in Jesus Christ’s perfect sonship: “Son, behold your Mother.” And like St. Juan Diego, we are reminded: “Am I not here… am I not your Mother?” God has given us to Mary, and our heavenly Mother will never abandon her children. Instead, she will take us to Jesus Christ and feed us the finest wheat and bread from heaven to give her children eternal life.

“Entering Into the Passion of Jesus Christ Our Lord”
Ignatian Silent Retreat
with Bill Zuelke and Spiritual Directors Team
August 19 – 23, 2024
During this silent Ignatian retreat, we will do a deep dive into the Third Movement (or Week) of the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius.
We will start each day with a reflection on the theme of the day. You will be invited to spend three one-hour periods in focused prayer on the material and you will have a chance to meet with a private retreat director. Each evening will be an opportunity to share the graces of the day and receive points to guide your next day’s prayer. The retreat will be in silence, with reading during meals. You will have the opportunity for daily mass and prayer with the monks should you choose that.
Bill Zuelke is a Spiritual Director, life coach, and an associate staff member of Soul Formation. He provides spiritual direction, adult education, retreats, workshops, supervision, and consultations. He is trained in Jesuit spirituality and discernment of spirits and has been providing individual spiritual direction, private and group retreats, and assistance with personal and corporate discernment for over 35 years. He will work alongside a team of spiritual directors who will be available for one-on-one spiritual directions.

Faith and Writing, 2024
God’s Grandeur: Praying and Writing with Gerard Manley Hopkins
with Deacon Chris Anderson
August 26-28
During these two days we will use several poems by the great Catholic poet Gerard Manley Hopkins as prompts for writing about our own experience of God in the world.
This is for everyone, for writers and people who aren’t confident about writing – for people who love poetry and people who have never read a poem before. Hopkins is famous for being difficult to understand, but he isn’t really: in every poem he is praising the glory of God, he is always praying, and that’s what this retreat is about. It’s about reading and writing as prayer. It’s about deepening our sense of the presence of God in our lives.
Please bring a notebook or laptop or whatever you like to write with.
Chris Anderson is a deacon at St. Mary’s in Corvallis, a professor emeritus of English at Oregon State University, and a poet and writer. His latest book of poems, Love Calls Us Here, was published this spring by Wildhouse Press in Boston.
Cost: $350

Modeling Mary in Life and in Prayer
Women’s Retreat
with Christin McIntyre, MD, Ph.D.
November 15 – 17, 2024
As women – daughters, sisters, wives and mothers – we are uniquely designed to observe the needs of others and intercede on their behalf. Yet too often our loving concern only drives us to worry, while we feel powerless to help the ones we love. Learn to model our Blessed Mother, Mary, collecting treasure from all that God permits to happen, and making use of all things in intercessory prayer. Experience “God with us” in Immanuel Moment meditation, drawing peace and strength from the presence of Jesus within, as Mary did. Pray alongside your sisters in Christ, with time spent in small groups to share joys and sorrows and strengthen each other in faith. Come with all your cares and anxieties, and find rest for your souls.
Dr. Christin McIntyre is a Portland native and married mother of five who converted to Catholicism in 1997. She earned a combined MD/PhD degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Kansas Medical Center, and returned to Oregon to complete a residency in Psychiatry at OHSU. She has been in outpatient practice as a psychiatrist in the Portland area since 2003, and continues to see patients in Oregon and Washington by telehealth since relocating to Idaho in 2021. Psychotherapy continues to be a main focus of her practice, and to better serve a growing number of Catholic patients in recent years, she has pursued training in Thomistic psychology as well as with the John Paul II Healing Center.
